About Me
I remember the feeling of shame as I sobbed to a coworker unable to form the sentence - "I need help." I felt frustrated that I couldn't stop crying or feeling immense sadness. I felt vulnerable showing emotion, especially while I was living abroad in Japan, a country where most people "suffer in silence."
While abroad, I experienced isolation caused by the difficulties of communication, cultural and societal differences. The language barrier between me and my students and my co-workers, required a significant amount of patience, attention to detail, and an open mind. During my time abroad, I struggled to find a culturally competent therapist that could help me. As an Asian American who grew up in California, I understand the stigma that comes with mental health and the barriers that prevent us from seeking help.
My time in Japan allowed me the opportunity to better understand the universal value of compassion, patience, and simply "holding space." Through my journey in therapy and moments of self-reflection, I set forth my decision to enter the profession of social work and mental health.
